Slag-Lime for Texas Sulfate Jobs: Both Materials, Delivered, Priced Per Treated Ton.

A slag-lime job needs two deliveries that land in the right order: slag cement dry to the grade, then lime as slurry within four hours. Hasten supplies both from Houston to any Texas jobsite and quotes the whole system per ton of treated soil, so the comparison to a lime job is one number.

One supplier, both halves. Grade 100 slag cement from a Houston producer on the TxDOT list, plus quicklime, hydrated lime or commercial slurry for the 1 percent.
Priced per treated ton. Send acreage, depth and the geotech. We quote the system, not two commodities.

What the Job Needs, and How It Arrives

MaterialDoseHow it arrivesTiming on site
Slag cement (GGBFS Grade 100)5% of dry soil weightBulk pneumatic tanker, about 25 tons, spread dryFirst. Mixed until homogeneous
Lime, as slurry1% (2% on fat clay, two-step)Quicklime slaked on site, hydrated lime slurry, or commercial slurry from a local plantWithin four hours of finishing the slag mix; compact within two hours after

The four-hour window is the whole job. Slag placed and not activated in time is filler. We schedule the slag and the lime deliveries together, and we will not send the slag until the lime is confirmed.

Per Treated Ton: The Only Fair Number

For one acre treated 8 inches deep, about 1,525 tons of dry soil, material only. Slag is a placeholder price until quoted; lime at $240 per ton.

SystemLime trucks per acreTotal trucksMaterial per treated ton
6% lime alone at $2403.73.7$14.40
5% slag at $120 + 1% quicklime0.63.7$8.40
5% slag at $180 + 1% quicklime0.63.7$11.40
5% slag at $120 + 2% quicklime (fat clay)1.24.3$10.80

Slag-lime uses a sixth of the lime of a straight lime job and lands well under it on material cost. Where cheap kiln dust is still available on ordinary low-sulfate clay, kiln dust is cheaper still. Slag-lime is the answer where lime heaves, not a universal replacement, and we will say which applies to your soil.

Texas Slag-Lime Supply Questions, Answered Straight

Do you deliver both the slag and the lime?

Yes. Slag cement from a Houston producer on the TxDOT list, and lime as quicklime, hydrated lime or commercial slurry depending on the job setup. We schedule them together so the four-hour window is met.

How do you price a slag-lime job?

Per ton of treated soil, from your acreage, depth and dosage. It is the only number that compares fairly to a lime job, because the dosages differ.

Can I buy commercial lime slurry near the job instead?

Often, yes, and on the first jobs it is usually cheaper than owning slaking equipment. We will price both ways.

Is slag-lime accepted on TxDOT work?

The slag is a qualified material under DMS-4620 and TxDOT has written a special provision for slag-lime stabilization on FM 3338. Acceptance under a given item is the district materials engineer's call.

How far in advance should I order?

A week for the Houston metro, two for DFW and Central Texas, more for the border and West Texas. Sulfate jobs are usually known well ahead from the geotech, so call when the report lands.
